About Us
The San Francisco Public Health Laboratory (PHL) is dedicated to protecting the health of citizens and visitors to San Francisco. Our facility has advanced and specialized testing capabilities to detect agents of infectious disease; as well as highly trained, experienced, California certified Public Health Microbiologists and support staff.
Essential Tests and Referral Services
San Francisco PHL provides clinical and reference testing utilizing sophisticated, state-of-the-art technology. As such, the SFPHL often participates in evaluations of new laboratory test kits and methods and is as well as applied research to explore ways to find better laboratory diagnostics.
The Laboratory tests clinical specimens from the DPH clinics and referred samples from hospital labs in our jurisdiction to assist in patient management. In addition, the SF PHL provides laboratory support for various population-based studies and outbreak investigations. The San Francisco PHL has language capability in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. Laboratory services provided include:
- HIV Testing – screening and confirmatory
- Sexually Transmitted Disease Testing
- Bacteriology testing and typing
- TB Testing, including culture, drug susceptibility and rapid (PCR) detection
- QuantiFERON – screening for latent TB
- Rabies Testing
