Public Health Laboratory Directors hold the highest position in the laboratory. They are responsible for the everyday workings of the laboratory, including the management, supervision, selection, training, and evaluation of laboratory staff in areas such as virology, molecular biology, parasitology, mycology, immunoassay, and bacteriology. The laboratory director manages the laboratory budget, compiles management reports on laboratory workload data for the state, and assists in the development of solutions to problems encountered in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory. Laboratory directors consult with physicians, hospital laboratories, independent laboratories, and clinical staff on test availability, specimen collection procedures, and test results. The Director plans and coordinates laboratory work with various sections of the Health Department, hospital laboratories, and clinics to meet their laboratory testing needs. Also, depending on the size and scope of the laboratory, the Director may or may not perform bench work, as needs are different among labs.
